living shorelines

Living shorelines are a green infrastructure technique using native vegetation alone or in combination with low sills to stabilize the shoreline. Living shorelines provide a natural alternative to ‘hard’ shoreline stabilization methods like rip rap or bulkheads, and provide numerous benefits including nutrient pollution remediation, essential fish habitat structure, and buffering of shorelines from waves and storms. Research indicates that living shorelines are more resilient than bulkheads in protecting against the effects of hurricanes.

The Reef Ball Foundation initially concentrated on coral reef restoration. Hundreds of projects ranged from designed artificial reefs to storm, tsunami and construction-related damage mitigation to developing and implementing groundbreaking coral propagation and planting systems. We have continually expanded our technology to meet the challenges of other environmental problems as well: protection and restoration of specific marine habitats such as turtle and bird conservation; estuary restoration; mangrove restoration; oyster restoration; and erosion control.
Reef Ball’s growth has been directly related to our technology’s flexibility and expanding use in a wide range of applications and a perfect example has been its recently proven effectiveness in Living Shorelines projects.

Looking ahead with our latest technology: EcoRap – the sea wall designed with nature

Our latest technology, Eco Rap Living Sea Walls, launched in the spring of 2016. Traditional sea walls add to coastal erosion by removing the shore’s ability to carry out a natural tidal process. Just as living reefs work as natural sea walls, the new seawall design is the first of its kind combining both a living shoreline and seawall designed to allow for natural marine vegetation growth and to create habitat for sea life using our new EcoRap Modules which are based on the original Reef Ball concept.

The first EcoRap seawall was deployed in Pinellas County, Florida following requests to help with their ailing sea walls and to enhance the environment. These new living seawalls, work hand-in-hand with Living Shoreline initiatives to protect the shoreline and promote marine life.

The City of Sarasota welcomed its first “living seawall” near downtown along Bayfront Park and O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill. It was constructed and installed by Reef Innovations using the Reef Ball Foundation’s EcoRap system.
